Prior Perils and The Epiphany of Deadlines for the Independent Author

Ah, the whimsical world of self-imposed deadlines. They’re like those New Year’s resolutions we make every January, filled with good intentions and a sprinkle of delusion. You know the drill: “I’ll write a chapter a day,” or “I’ll have my novel ready by next month.” But as life inevitably belly-flops into our plans, we find ourselves drowning in a sea of missed deadlines and broken promises. Such is the saga of my latest novel, “Hey Roomie!”

Picture this: there I was, armed with ambition and a caffeine-induced zeal, ready to conquer the literary world one keystroke at a time. I had it all planned out—release dates neatly penciled into my calendar, progress trackers adorned with motivational stickers, and a stellar Pandora playlist.

But alas, life had other plans. It sauntered in like an uninvited guest at a party, disrupting my carefully crafted schedule with its pesky demands and unexpected curveballs. Suddenly, my grand plans of churning out chapters faster than a caffeinated squirrel on a treadmill came crashing down like a poorly constructed Jenga tower.

At first, I played the blame game with the universe, pointing fingers at every distraction and obstacle in sight. “It’s the day job’s fault!” I’d exclaim indignantly, followed by a melodramatic sigh for good measure. “And don’t get me started on that plumbing disaster that turned my kitchen into a waterpark!”

But then, like a bolt of lightning illuminating a darkened sky, it hit me: I was the architect of my own downfall. I had set unrealistic expectations for myself, marching to the beat of a self-imposed drum that was more cacophony than symphony. It wasn’t the universe conspiring against me; it was my own stubborn insistence on adhering to deadlines that belonged in the fantasy realm.

After some soul-searching (and perhaps a healthy dose of self-pity), I came to a revelation: I am the boss of my own creative empire. As an independent author juggling a full-time job and a side hustle, I needed to cut myself some slack and embrace the chaos with open arms. After all, isn’t that the beauty of being your own boss? You make the rules, break the rules, and occasionally yeet the rulebook out the window for good measure.

So, fellow writers, if you find yourself shackled by the chains of self-imposed deadlines, take heart in knowing that you’re not alone. Embrace the messiness of creativity, dance with the rhythm of uncertainty, and above all, give yourself the grace you deserve. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was “Hey Roomie!” But rest assured, it will be worth the wait—whenever it decides to make its grand entrance into the world.

Until then, I’ll be here, sipping my coffee and embracing the beautiful chaos that is the writing life. Cheers to deadlines, both kept and broken, and to the stories that refuse to be tamed by the ticking hands of time. Let’s raise a glass to creative freedom and the unruly journey of bringing words to life.

And remember, dear writer: relax those reins, take a deep breath, and let the words flow at their own pace. After all, the best stories are the ones that refuse to be rushed…right?
